BAOBAB
International Association for Popular Cooperation
Sowing seeds for a sustainable, fair, and shared future
We are an international non-profit association that promotes cooperation in science and technology among the peoples of the various communities of the Global South, with the aim of social and agro-ecological development.
What We Do
We support popular efforts to democratise and popularise the development, exchange, and use of technologies such that they serve rounded and equitable social development
Networking Urban and Rural Social Movements
We partner with community groups, cooperatives, and popular organisations supporting URSMs. In the past we have facilitated small grants for projects designed and implemented by URSMs to address urgent needs. We have supported projects in agroecology, food sovereignty, and peasant literacy.
Science and Technology Exchanges
We support popular efforts to democratise and popularise science; and the development, exchange, and use of technologies that serve equitable and sustainable social development. We have organised two Bio-inputs Schools in the Global South, facilitated the construction of a bioinputs unit and the acquisition of small farming machinery equipment in Latin America, and more.
Landscapes
In the face of the serious global environmental crisis, we seek to strengthen initiatives that mitigate climate change, pesticide contamination, and the destruction of biodiversity, while supporting popular ways of life with high socio-ecological resilience.
Popular Urbanism
This is the most recent initiative in our association. We have initiated a research into implementing urban development based on popular participation and responsiveness to people's economic, social, and cultural needs. We have planned a thorough discussion with our URSMs regarding non-traditional construction materials, home gardens, basic sanitation, urban planning, and more.
Facilitating Inter-governmental Relations
We are learning how to leverage inter-governmental relations to support programmes centred on the needs of peasant food producers. Our programmes enabled collaboration between policy makers and researchers in different continents and local URSMs that support mechanisation and bio inputs solutions for family farmers in Northeast Brazil and in Argentina.
Strategic product value chains
We believe that the solution to the global food crisis lies in strengthening peasant-based food systems. In this sense, we work together with cooperatives and associations to improve the technical itinerary, processing systems and marketing logistics of the main production chains in the different regions of the global south.
